Mission

The mission of the W.J. Keenan High School Raider Engineering and Academic Leadership Program (Project REAL) is to actively engage students in math and science courses that are enriched with engineering applications to increase students’ academic performance in the study of math, science, engineering, and technology related fields at the post-secondary level.

Overview

After discussing several proposals and concepts, it was the committee’s decision to adopt the concept of Project REAL(Raider Engineering and Academic Leadership) and develop a of focus engineering. The committee’s research indicated that a focus in engineering would accomplish two things:

  • Increase student achievement in the math and science areas

  • Increase student success in traditionally under-represented fields of study at post-secondary institutions.

Development of Partnership

The committee recommended that W. J. Keenan High School seek to develop a partnership with The University of South Carolina to advance the initiative and for the mutual benefit of the students enrolled in Project REAL. Dr. Ronald Epps, Superintendent of Richland School District One, endorsed the development of such a proposal and arranged for a meeting with the USC Provost, the Dean of Engineering, and the Dean of Education. This distinguished group was supportive of the concept. Ultimately, a planning committee composed of representatives from all interested parties assisted in the development of Project REAL.
