Project REAL Curriculum Project REAL: Raider Engineering and Academic Leadership W. J. Keenan High School - Columbia, SC CurriculumThe focus will include a rigorous curriculum based on high standards with the expectation that all students will achieve at high levels in math and science. A direct partnership with The University of South Carolina will widen course offerings, to include PLTW (Project Lead The Way) pre-engineering courses, and benefit both parties. Students will have opportunities to participate in the most challenging high school courses, and they will be encouraged to take college level courses during their high school career. Keenan High School teachers will work with USC faculty members and receive training to allow Keenan to offer PLTW courses. The high quality of professional dialogue between USC and W. J. Keenan High School faculty members will further accelerate student achievement. Proposed CurriculumPre-engineering courses developed by PLTW:
PLTW courses can be offered to allow flexibility. The curriculum has been aligned to improve success in courses that compliment one another. There are strong alignments between the IED course and Geometry, and the DE course and Algebra 2. Other considerations are IED must be taken before CIM; EDD may be offered to juniors who wish to add it to their portfolios for college applications.
Student participating in
project REAL must complete the prescribed curriculum with
an overall GPA of 3.0 in order to receive the special
diploma. In addition, they must also complete a community
service class or approved project. Project REAL students
will been given opportunities to participate in:
internships, mentor programs, research projects with USC
faculty and students, engineering competitions, all to
enhance academic performance. Certified Teachers
